The top three picks for sightseers are Muttart Conservatory, Alberta Legislature Building and grounds, and Fort Edmonton.
Another popular venue is the Art Gallery of Alberta. Muttart Conservatory I enjoy visiting this indoor paradise anytime of year; however it is a special treat on a cold winter day. It is a showcase presenting the beauty of the four seasons. Exhibits include more than 700 plants and trees. Housed in four spectacular glass pyramids are displays of flora and fauna taking you through a steaming jungle, across a sun-parched desert, a trek through a temperate forest and a stroll through the scents of a floral paradise. A center court yard offers an opportunity to enjoy lunch while taking time to appreciate the “Great Cycle of Life” mural that encompasses the perimeter of the atrium space. The mural is the work of renowned Aboriginal artist Alex Janvier.

Although Alberta does not have as long a growing season as many places, the 57 acres of parkland surrounding the historical 1912 Legislative Buildings are peaceful and beautiful. Anyone who enjoys horticulture will want to relax and enjoy the grounds. If you are interested in architecture, politics and history, a tour of the Legislative Buildings is fascinating and informative. The history of Alberta’s premiers is interesting. Only three premiers have been defeated in an election. Eight premiers resigned and one died (after 8 years in office). Many premiers have held office eight years or more. More astounding is that the Social Credit Party held office for 36 consecutive years and at the present the Progressive Conservatives hold office and have held office for 36 consecutive years. Social Credit Premier, Ernest Manning held office 25 consecutive years and Progressive Conservative Premier Ralph Klein held office for 26 consecutive years. Tours of the Legislative Building take place every hour on the hour from 9AM to Noon and every half hour from 12:30 to 4:00PM. Admission and guided tours are FREE. Address: 97 Ave. & 107 St. Edmonton, AB Phone: 1-780-427-2826
Fort Edmonton is Canada’s largest living history park. Costumed historical interpreters enable visitors to experience the life of the early pioneers. The park depicts life as it was in the 1846 Hudson’s Bay fort and on the streets of Edmonton during 1885, 1905 and 1920. The historical interpretation changes daily, making it worth visiting more than once. In 1905 Prohibition was in full swing, and interpretive guides march the streets to ban the demon rum. Another day you have the opportunity to learn about herbal remedies and to help make bannock (the staple bread of the natives in the Native Encampment. Take a visit to the 1920 Midway and Exhibition. Food service outlets and period retail stops are reminders of bygone days. Street car rides and a working steam train are included in admission. Hotel Selkirk offers overnight accommodations for those wishing to experience more of the life of early Albertans. Summer hours (July 1 - Sept. 3): 10 am -6 pm Admission: $13 adult, $9.75 youth/seniors, $6.50 child, $39.50 family. Address: Fox Drive & Whitemud Drive, Edmonton, AB Phone: 1-780-496-8787

I was raised in the 1950’s only 35 miles from Edmonton, so Edmonton does not come to mind as a tourist hotspot. However, upon a closer look, Edmonton has evolved over the past half century to become a cosmopolitan city recognized for its culture. Edmonton is the capital city of Alberta. Its picturesque river valley and some of the winding roads, including a drive through ...more
