No other treatment has been shown to prevent osteoarthritis from progressing. Scientific research clearly points to results for glucosamine Sulfate users. This puts glucosamine sulfate into a category by itself. Given its terrific safety record and the fact it's relatively inexpensive, people with osteoarthritis should definitely consider glucosamine sulfate when seeking treatment.
I can personally attest to the results one can achieve by using natural remedies to relieve pain and even reverse the effects of osteoarthritis. I had knee surgery when I was 16 and the doctors botched the operation. Leaving me with severe knee problems for several years and residual knee problems for a life time. It is not much wonder I have osteoarthritis in that joint some 40 years later. Eight years ago, I was told I would be lucky if I could make it three years without knee replacement surgery, however, I was also too young to be an appropriate candidate for knee replacement surgery.

When I started taking Glucosamine Sulfate, with Chondrotin, it took a few weeks for me to see results. My x-rays at the time showed a badly deteriorated knee joint. I took Glucosamine Sulfate with Chondroitin religiously. And within a few months my knee felt the best it had felt in years. I continued to take Glucosamine with Condroitin and two years later I had my knee x-rayed and an MRI done due to a car accident that reinjured the knee. Before taking the x-ray, based on the x-ray from two years earlier, the doctors were very concerned about the knee. They were very surprised to see the knee joint looked much better in the x-ray. The doctor said "I don't know what you have done for that knee, but keep doing it!"
He was a medical doctor who was fond of prescribing pharmaceuticals and did not like it much when I told him about my Glucosamine Sulphate with Chondroitin regime. However, that knee that was is such bad shape eight years ago is still working better know than it was 10 years ago before I started the Glucosamine Sulfate and Chondroitin regime. I have been a fairly skeptical person when it comes to natural remedies, however faced with knee replacement in my early fifties was not an option! I am convinced. It works - it is well worth trying!
One of the first glucosamine sulfate studies compared the nutrient's effectiveness with that of conventional painkillers, such as Ibuprofen. Medications such as Ibuprofen on a long term basis can cause liver damage. In 1980, researchers at the First Medical Division in Venice, Italy, studied 30 elderly patients with advanced osteoarthritis. For three weeks, half the patients were given injections and glucosamine sulfate pills; the other half received injections and pills of a standard painkiller.
At the end of the trial, both groups reported significant decrease in joint pain and improvement in joint function. One of the reasons mobility improves that is uniform across all studies of joint pain, is that when pain is relieved the patient naturally uses the joint more and mobility is a 'use it or lose it' scenario. In the study after all treatments were stopped, the glucosamine subjects continued to note improvements. The control subjects did not. Four patients in the glucosamine-treated group, in fact, became symptom free, but none in the control group did.
Researchers concluded, even in cases of severe degenerative joint disease, glucosamine sulfate reduces pain as well as painkilling pharmaceutical drugs. More and more people are choosing to opt for natural remedies believing the side effects to be less of a concern. There is an increasing interest in the sensibility of natural remedies that have stood the test of time, can sometimes be better than sophisticated pharmaceutical researched designer drugs.
In 1982 researchers in Portugal, compared glucosamine sulfate to ibuprofen. For eight weeks, 40 patients with osteoarthritis of the knees took daily doses of either 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine or 1,200 milligrams of ibuprofen.
During first two weeks, ibuprofen seemed to relieve pain faster and better than glucosamine sulfate. But after two more weeks, no more improvements were reported by the ibuprofen test group. At the end of eight weeks, patients in the glucosamine test group were reporting far less pain than those in the ibuprofen group and showed more significant improvements in joint function.
Osteoarthritis can be a painful or even debilitating condition, but if you suffer from the symptoms of osteoarthritis, know that you are not alone -- and natural home remedies like glucosamine sulfate may be able to help.
It is a recurring theme that ibuprofen users get the quickest results, however the longevity of their results wane, by comparison of those using Glucosamine. Another study comparing the two drugs followed 200 patients with osteoarthritis of the knees for four weeks. As in the previous study, one group got 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine a day; the other received daily doses of 1,200 milligrams of ibuprofen.
After one week, ibuprofen takers were feeling better than glucosamine patients. But by the second week, and notably by the fourth week, glucosamine patients said they felt just as good as ibuprofen patients. However, 35 percent of people taking ibuprofen reported experiencing side effects, including nausea, itching, and fatigue. Seven subjects had to stop taking ibuprofen because of toxicity; only one person in the glucosamine group had to pull out of the study. Mild stomach upset was experienced by six percent of glucosamine patients.
The researchers concluded that glucosamine sulfate was, in some ways, more effective than conventional pain relievers in treating osteoarthritis patients. Glucosamine therapy is not a quick fix. It takes between 3 and 5 weeks for the patient to experience results.
No food is particularly rich in the nutrient, and most glucosamine appears to be destroyed by cooking. Glucosamine is found to some degree in most of the foods we eat, especially fish and meat. Seeing as it is not possible to get enough Glucosamine to make a difference through your diet, it is necessary to take Glucasamine Supplements.
Glucosamine is available in three varieties: the previously discussed glucosamine sulfate and glucosamine hydrochloride, and N-acetylglucosamine (NAG). While all three varieties of glucosamine offer various levels of effectiveness in relieving arthritis pain the Glucosamine/ Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial in the New England Journal of Medicine in 2006 shows evidence otherwise.
This study of 1,583 people with osteoarthritis of the knee found that glucosamine hydrochloride made little or no difference. When glucosamine hydrochloride was combined with chondroitin sulfate, there was some benefit for more serious osteoarthritis pain, but glucosamine hydrochloride by itself should not be used. Further testing of the other varieties as well as comparisons of glucosamine sulfate and NAG are needed in order to assess the benefits of NAG.

Glucosamine sulphate is often sold in formulation with chondroitins. Chondroitin is also produced by the body and helps cartilage retain fluid, keeping it spongy. Although studies about the effectiveness of chondroitins leave the verdict for condroitins as yet unclear. Nearly all the research has used glucosamine sulfate supplements alone, not in combination with chondroitins. A growing body of research suggests chondroitin sulfate is also effective, but there simply isn't as much research on the combination of Glucosomine Sulphate and Chondroitin.
For some people who need to reduce their salt intake, there can be a concern with the sulfate in glucosimine sulfate. Glucosamine sulfate is available in a potassium-bound form; look for glucosamine sulfate potassium chloride, which alleviates that concern.
Supplements are not a complete answer to joint problems. It is counterproductive to take a supplement and then engage in other activities and lifestyle choices that threaten the health of your joints. Refrain from repetitive motions that put excessive stress on your joints. Eat a nutritious diet, getting regular exercise and rest, keeping excess weight off, and, if possible.
Glucosamine sulfate does delay the worsening of osteoarthritis of the knee, according to scientific research. Using X-rays to measure whether knees were deteriorating 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine sulfate once a day were shown to have one-third to one-half the risk of worsening compared to those taking placebos.
Another study used electron microscopy and showed that cartilage taken from subjects who had used glucosamine sulfate appeared healthy and young.
If you suffer from arthritis, ask a doctor - preferably a naturopath or doctor who understands natural remedies, whether glucosamine might help you. It's possible that you and your doctor can come up with a therapy to reduce your symptoms, and perhaps even reverse them, without the risk of dangerous side effects.
